Connection

“C” Connection

Connection is foundational: it fosters trust and understanding. But it requires authenticity, vulnerability, communication, and care. Leaders need to model presence and active listening. Building the trust and safety required for connection is essential for innovative workplaces.

Understand

“U” Understand

Understanding your values invites you to heal toxic shame through vulnerability. What happens when you share mistakes? How does vulnerability encourage connection, honesty, and growth? Reflect on the safety needed for vulnerability and how others’ vulnerability is a gift.

Respect

“R” Respect

With a clear sense of your values and vulnerability, practice respectful feedback. Does shame block you from receiving it? What conditions ensure safety? Is feedback actionable and behavior-focused? Emotional resilience and safe spaces enable growth—prepare for big leaps forward.

Empowerment

“E” Empowerment

You’ve explored shame, values, vulnerability, and feedback. How can you heal toxic shame while fostering a resilient, innovative workplace? Build safety and trust to drive growth and efficiency. Empower change with curiosity and playfulness—embrace transforming your workplace culture together.

Emotional Resilience Is Your Organization’s Superpower — Are You Ready To Get Curious?

Science & Theory

Often fueled by shame, imposter syndrome can lead to burnout and decreased job satisfaction

  • People who experience shame are more likely to suffer from depression

They are also more likely to experience anxiety and social isolation, as shown in a study in the Journal of Anxiety Disorders

  • Shame prevents people from taking risks

It prevents innovation and stifles creativity and progress, based on research by Dr. Brené Brown

  • Chronic shame can elevate stress levels

It increases cortisol and leads to health issues such as heart disease, as found in Dr. Kristen Neff’s studies

  • Psychological safety is compromised in shame-based cultures

But it is vital for high-performing teams, as found in Google’s Project Aristotle

  • Stress-related productivity losses cost U.S. businesses over $300 billion annually

And are often exacerbated by shame, as estimated by The American Institute of Stress

I implemented the Workplace CURE at my law firm, and here’s what it led to after 1 year:

40%  in feeling listened to
20%  in feeling connected
58%  in feeling able to achieve a work-life balance
25%  in trust in the team

36%  in feeling included in decision-making processes
